“Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication…and WOW, Comey is a leaker!”
Donald Trump, Twitter Post, June 9, 2017

I’m going to ignore the second part of the tweet, the “and WOW, Comey is a leaker!” part, mostly because I’m just not sure that a private citizen telling of his meeting with the President of the United States really lives up to my expectations of a leak. Unless one is sharing confidential or secret information we are free to write what we want and to share it publicly. An entire memoir industry is built on this simple idea.

But the first part, well, to quote the President, “WOW”. False statements and lies but total and complete vindication. Those false statements would have come from a man who has honorably served his country for decades. Those lies would have come from a man who, love him or hate him, has been a fairly straight shooter throughout his professional career as a private attorney, as a U. S. Attorney, as a Deputy Attorney General, and as an FBI Director. A man who has served under 4 Presidents. Those statements would have come from a man whose years of experience, I would imagine, would have taught him to size up the basics of a person’s character fairly quickly.

Those statements came from a man who didn’t want to be left alone in a room with the President, a sentiment shared with actresses, socialites, pageant participants, and business folk from around the country. A President who has a well earned reputation for lying. A President whose work habits we apparently must forgive because he’s new to the job.

The President is calling this man a liar. Maybe he’s right. Maybe Comey is a liar. And, I, as an American citizen want to get to the truth of this matter. As such, I ask that our President step forward, and, to insure fairness, place his hand on the Bible, and swear that “what he shall state shall be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”

And after that, I would hope that the first question asked of our 45th President of the United States would be “Did you invite FBI Director James Comey to dinner on January 27, 2017?”, followed by one more question, “Would you pledge loyalty to the Citizens of the United States of America?”.

I have a hunch that the Bible would probably catch fire.
